Syed Abul Barq Alvi

Syed Abul Barq Alvi was a freedom fighter of the Bangladesh Liberation War and former dean of Institute of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He completed his B.F.A (Bachelor of Fine Art) in 1968 from Institute of Fine Art, University of Dhaka. He did his Post Graduate Research under the guidance of Prof. Naomi Asakura, Tsukuba University, Japan. He also studied in Printmaking under the guidance of eminent American Printmaker: Mr. Michael Ponce-de-Leon in 1967. He has taken up a keen interest of participating in major national and international fourteen (14) events including various Biennials, Triennials and especially the International Print Exhibition of Karachi and Lahore in Pakistan- 1967, Amman Jordan-1988, Contemporary Graphic Art of Bangladesh (12 Print maker’s Show) Calcutta, India-1993, and Contemporary Painting Exhibition of Bangladesh, Maldip-2010. He has participated in the Asian Art Biennale of Bangladesh (Dhaka) seven times and has been a part of forty National and Group Art Exhibitions. Alvi is the recipient of many awards including the SM Sultan Gold Medal- 2008, ‘Shilpakala Award- 2015’ Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy etc. He has also attended various workshops and art camps. He currently lives in Dhaka and works as an Honorary Professor at the Department of Printmaking, Faculty of Fine Art, Dhaka University.
